Zoom Test Microphone and Speakers

Echo and Feedback Issue

One of the problems with Zoom meeting is audio echo and feedback. It is very difficult to tell who in the meeting is the cause.

Don’t Get Muted

Hosts do not have time to deal with feedback and echo. But if they are forced into it they do not have time to troubleshoot your microphone and speaker. If the host determines you are the cause the remedy is the host muting your microphone for the duration of the meeting.

If you are speaker for the meeting and not sure if you could cause feedback and echo, contact the host before the meeting and arrange a session for testing. However you can test your microphone and speaker volumes using the Zoom testing tools and without being in a Zoom meeting. See the steps in this article.

Problem: Multiple Devices on Same Zoom Meeting

The problem can be caused by have two or more devices on the same Zoom meeting in earshot of each other. In this case all but one device can have the microphone activated.

Problem: Untested Microphone and Speaker Settings

This problem can be caused by a high microphone input level, high speaker output volume and their proximity to one another. In most cases the microphone and speaker proximity on mobile phones, desktops and tablets are not an issue. This is more the case if you are using external microphone or speakers.

To help eliminate you as a source of echo or feedback in the meeting you need to test both the microphone and speaker levels. So before you join any meeting or enable your microphone once in any meeting you need to find the settings in your Zoom app.

Use Zoom to Test Microphone and Speaker Levels

Test microphone and speaker setting so they are within GREEN levels.

We appreciate you do this before entering the meeting.

Look for Audio in Settings. In Audio there is a test for both microphone and speakers. You must run those tests and assure both the microphone input level and output volumes are GREEN levels and do not show spikes into the red zone.

Finding setting before entering meeting

You can test microphone and speaker levels before entering a Zoom meeting by opening the Zoom app and not the link you received. Then select the settings icon. Here is an example for the desktop Zoom app.

Then you can use the Zoom link to start the meeting.

Finding audio settings in meeting

However if you enter the meeting without testing, then immediately mute your microphone and open the audio setting to test the microphone and speaker. Then you can unmute the microphone once you have all green levels.
